Where have you been all my is even happening to my tastebuds?! Just got in a bag of Ethiopian Keffa Chena Wush Wush three days off roast, and I am completely flabbergasted. The batteries in my scale died right before the bloom finished and I have no idea what my pour ratio ended at or my total this is one of the best cups of coffee I have ever tasted. I'll never be able to replicate it I'm sure. Goes to show though that incredible beans and consistent grind will get you at least 80% of the way to a fantastic cup. Brewed 25g in a December Dripper with a Kalita Wave filter. It's suuuuuuuper juicy, and quite floral in notable contrast to the very berry Hambela Natural I was drinking in the prior cup. Mouthfeel is round and full like Cognac and Benedictine, or diluted Lemonhart 151 Demerara rum (which always reminded me of coffee! ), and coats the tongue with a syrupy sweetness that manages to both not be cloying and lingers forever. Now that it has cooled some there is a pleasing acidity developing with overtones of lime zest.
I'm not the right person to tell whether the usage of Russian-specific terms (names, titles, and other words for "taste") is overwhelming or not but I definitely found it smoother than in the first book. There's a glossary and an explanation about name conventions at the back just in case. None of the book would work, however, without Vasya herself. If The Bear and the Nightingale was Vasya's coming-of-age story, here she is a confident young woman, eager to prove herself to the world. It's especially fun to watch her play the "older sister" role to her niece, a great reversal from her relationships with most of the characters in the first book. Not that Vasya doesn't have a lot left to learn: she's still uncertain about her magical powers, endearingly amazed even by small towns, and brashly unaware of the Moscow court's intrigues. Watching her explore the wider world, so different from her countryside home, made me grin. Unfortunately, the book is marred by some mishandling of the ending.

Just before Christmas I decided to try out a GNOME extension I'd read about, PaperWM. It looked promising, but I was a little nervous about breaking my existing workflow, which was heavily reliant on the Put Windows extension. It's great! I have had to carefully un-train some of my muscle memory but it seems to be worth it. It seems to strike a great balance between the rigidity of a tile-based window manager and a more traditional floating-windows one. I'm always wary of coming to rely upon large extensions or plugins. The parent software is often quite hands-off about caring about supporting users of them, or breaking them by making API changes. Certainly those Firefox users who were heavily dependent on plugins prior to the Quantum fire-break are still very, very angry. (I actually returned to Firefox at that point, so I avoided the pain, and enjoy the advantages of the re-architecture).

Probably one of the biggest attractions for me, is her emotional and self-awareness while writing. It is an outer as well as inner journey and she makes this interesting and relate-able for everyone. We are all on a journey of self-identity. I so admire Kira's courage and willingness to put herself in situations that push the boundaries of safety and comfort. This seems stupid at times, too, but it is fascinating to go along for the ride with her. Highly recommended. Reviewed in the United States on August 29, 2019 Verified Purchase Not so much an exciting travel log, as it was a self-indulgent look at the writer's life outside of Papua New Guinea and/or her internal struggles. My impression was that the author was trying a bit too hard to be poetic and eloquent, while occasionally allowing the actual story to bleed through. I ended up not really liking the person she was describing (herself) and that colored the way that I looked at everything that she wrote about. Reviewed in the United States on July 19, 2017 Verified Purchase I enjoyed this book very much.
